Artist Bio
Mitchie Melhuish is a Montreal-based photo and visual artist whose artistic practice combines technical and conceptual art, driven by themes of identity and the beauty-sphere. Her artistic inspirations derive from her love for fashion, magazines, femininity, the human body, queer culture and her experiences as a transwoman. Her strength as a photographer is in a studio setting with a digital lens, and she loves to work collaboratively with models and other artists. She is educated in makeup artistry with 7 years of experience, fluent in Adobe Photoshop, and knowledgeable with Adobe Premiere Pro, Google Docs/Slides/Sheets, website development, and digital platforms like Instagram and TikTok. While the foundation of her art practice is grounded in studio/portrait/fashion photography, she has experience with street-style photography, video, analog, collage, illustration and lithography. Her love for visual art blossomed during high school continuing to be her subject of focus in post-secondary, graduating from Concordia University with a BFA majoring in Photography and minoring in Sexuality & Gender Studies.
In 2015 she began studying photography, and in 2017 her journey as a makeup artist. She found early inspiration from pop and drag culture, with a specific fondness for the 80s and 90s. During this time she experimented with explosive and untechnical artistry, exploring her abilities and passions while learning to collaborate with models and other visual artists. Her experience in the beauty industry began in 2019 working with Sephora Canada. She quickly was trained in all sectors of the retail environment, becoming one of their top-selling advisors. In this setting, she learned technical makeup, makeup for photo/in-person, and colour theory, simultaneously developing her marketing and sales abilities, and relationship-building with clients. These years ignited her passion for the beauty and fashion industry, ingraining core principles of fashion photography and beauty in her work. Through her journey as a transwoman, she has grown an even deeper attachment with these spaces, as fashion and beauty are not only a means of happiness or euphoria but a world that was essential to progressing her feminine identity.
Fashion and beauty are what I dedicate my life to, as they not only support me in confidence or self-expression,
but they are the spaces that foster my womanhood, allowing me to blossom into the woman I am today,
and the woman I am becoming.
